Plymouth Argyle's Turnaround: From Relegation Zone to Playoff Contenders
How Plymouth Argyle turned a season drifting towards relegation into a late push for promotion.
Two points now separate Plymouth Argyle from the League One playoffs, a situation that looked unthinkable when they were in the relegation zone at the end of 2025.
At the turn of the year, Argyle’s season appeared to be drifting towards a battle for survival. Sitting in the bottom four, the focus was firmly on staying in the division rather than dreaming of promotion.
Yet, in the months since, Argyle’s story has shifted dramatically.
A sustained run of form has propelled Argyle up the table and into contention for the top six. Since December 6th, they have lost just five of their last 23 league matches, a run that has transformed their campaign from one of concern into one of real potential. Now just two points outside the playoff places, the turnaround has redefined their season.
From pressure to belief: the Cleverley turnaround
When Tom Cleverley took charge at the start of the League One season, there was optimism about a fresh direction.
By November, that optimism had faded.
Argyle were bottom of the table, results were poor and fan frustration was growing. By December, pressure had intensified to the point where sections of supporters were calling for a change in the dugout.
What followed, however, has defined Plymouth’s season.
Performances improved, results followed, and belief returned. The same manager who had been under scrutiny is now leading one of the most impressive turnarounds in the league.
The Goals Behind Argyle’s Revival
A key part of that resurgence has been a considerable increase in the number of goals scored.
Lorent Tolaj has scored 15 league goals this season, placing him among the division’s leading scorers since his move to Plymouth Argyle at the start of the season, following a reported £1.2 million transfer from Port Vale F.C..
Alongside him, Aribim Pepple has emerged as one of the form players in the league. After scoring just once before the turn of the year, Pepple has netted 11 league goals in 2026, a remarkable run that has helped drive Argyle up the table.
Setback, response, and renewed belief
The 2-1 defeat to Bolton Wanderers on Good Friday, at Home Park and against ten men, was a frustrating setback and a missed opportunity to break into the playoff places.
“Monday is another huge game.” Cleverley said following the defeat. “We realise the margin for error has now reduced, which increases a bit of pressure."
Argyle’s response was emphatic.
A 3-0 victory over Barnsley F.C. not only restored momentum but moved them to within two points of the top six, underlining the teams resilience.
The performance also continued their impressive away form this season, with Argyle ranking among the top three sides in the division on the road.
With only five games remaining, the challenge remains whether they can translate this turnaround into promotion.
